چکیده

To help determine the chemical composition of the Earth’s mantle, we characterised the high-pressure mineral assemblage of an undepleted natural peridotite—thought to be representative of the Earth’s upper-mantle—to 107 GPa using high-resolution X-ray diffraction. At lower-mantle conditions, the peridotite transforms to the assemblage 76 (F 2)% (Mg0.88Fe0.05 2 + Fe0.01 3 + Al0.12Si0.94)O3 orthorhombic perovskite by volume (at zero pressure), 17 (F 2)% (Mg0.80Fe0.20)O magnesiowüstite and 7 (F 1)% CaSiO3 perovskite. The measured room-temperature bulk properties of this high-pressure assemblage, together with a range of estimates of thermal properties of the constituent minerals, appear to be inconsistent with seismological constraints on the density and bulk modulus of the lower mantle. Our results suggest that the lower mantle differs in bulk composition (e.g., richer in iron, Mg#f 0.85) from current estimates for the upper mantle, requiring some amount of segregation between the upper and lower mantle over geological history. Density profile of pyrolite under the lower mantle conditions

[1] The pyrolite model is one of the possible compositions of the Earth’s lower mantle. The lower mantle’s composition is generally modelled by comparing seismic observations with mineral physics data of possible lower mantle end-member phases. Here, we report the compression behavior of a natural KLB-1 peridotite (a representative composition of the pyrolite model) in a quasihydrostatic enviro...

Limits to resolution in composition and density in ultra high-pressure experiments on natural mantle-rock samples

We compressed and analyzed an undepleted natural peridotite—thought to be representative of the Earth’s upper mantle— from ∼25 to 110 GPa and heated to 2000–2500 K. Scatter in zero-pressure unit-cell volumes observed for high-pressure phases synthesized from peridotite, of ±0.4% for orthorhombic perovskite and ±0.8% for magnesiowüstite, can be ascribed to compositional heterogeneity in the natu...

Petrogenesis of mantle peridotites from the South of Jazmourian, Makran accretionary prism, Iran

Mantle peridotites exposed in south Jazmourian comprise of lherzolite and porphyroclastic Cpx-bearing harzburgite in the lower part with chromitite lenses in the upper parts. Petrography and microprobe studies shows evidence of melt-peridotite interactions; post melting processes and subsolidus interactions, which has been associated with appearance of two generations of deformed primary pyroxe...

EXTENSION OF LINEAR ISOTHERM REGULARITY TO LOWER DENSITY RANGE

The general equation of state which was found for dense fluids, both compressed liquids and dense supercritical fluids, namely "Linear Isotherm Regularity," is extended to the lower density range, specifically for densities lower than the Boyle density. This new equation of state which is called "ELIR" is shown to be compatible with the equations of state based on statistical-mechanical the...
